Stanford Solar Car Project

July 2010

Volkswagen Group of America is proud to be a sponsor of the Stanford Solar Car Project.

Founded in 1989, the Stanford Solar Car Project (SSCP) is an entirely student-run, non-profit organization fueled by its members’ passion for environmentally sustainable technology. The team, comprised mainly of undergraduate engineering students, designs and builds solar cars from the ground up to compete in cross-continental solar races.

The team will be racing their solar car ‘Apogee’ in June this year at the 2010 American Solar Challenge. They will compete with other teams to win this 1,100 mile race from Tulsa, OK to Chicago, IL. The team is building a new vehicle from the ground up to compete in the 2011 World Solar Challenge – a 3,000 km race from Darwin to Adelaide though the Australian outback.

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (VWGoA) is reiterating its commitment to sustainable mobility through its sponsorship of the Stanford Solar Car Project. VWGoA is committed to advancing automotive research at the Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Laboratory (VAIL) at Stanford University and programs like the SSCP generate enthusiasm for automobiles in the student community. This sponsorship also opens the doors for SSCP team members to access the expertise in vehicle connectivity, human-machine interfaces, driver assistance systems, vehicle testing, and electric drivetrain systems at the Electronics Research Laboratory.
