Online 3D Navigation
We are combining photo-realistic, 3D maps and satellite imagery, with dynamic web content such as information on available parking spots tailored specifically for your destination. Internet access also allows for flexible web search for points of interest and other location-based information. The sheer volume of data that the system can access from the Internet could not be stored on a DVD or hard-drive and would be challenging to update effectively in an un-connected system.
Whenever the vehicle is not connected, for instance, during an off-road trip to the Grand Canyon, the onboard navigation system kicks in, ensuring an uninterrupted and safe routing experience. Predictive algorithms developed by our team anticipate drops in connection at network ‘dead-zones’ and we manage the download of data in advance for these areas to create a virtually ‘always-connected’ navigation solution.
This project was first shown publicly at the 2005 Intelligent Transportation Systems World Congress in San Francisco and has subsequently been shown at the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show, and in Las Vegas at the 2007 Los Angeles Motor Show.
