The Workshops of the ERL

One great part about the Electronics Research Lab is our ability to design, prototype and manufacture many of our projects in house. This is possible because we have an assortment of specialty tools and equipment available in the workshop facilities. The ERL houses a state of the art electronics lab, a fully stocked machine shop, and a garage space that can accommodate more than four project cars at a time.

The electronics workshop at the ERL has a wide array of electronics equipment: It contains everything we need for analyzing and troubleshooting complex circuits, as well as traditional tools for building prototypes and quickly testing our ideas. Inside the E-lab you’ll find oscilloscopes, function generators, multi meters, and power supplies. There is also an assortment of prototyping parts and equipment like soldering and de-soldering irons, breadboards, a microscope, and an extensive stock of discrete electronic components and connectors. Combined with our circuit board design software, we have the ability to create production ready circuit boards at the ERL.

In an adjacent room sits the ERL machine shop: this is where a majority of our rapid prototypes are created. The shop contains a lathe and mill both with digital readout and automatic feeds, a laser cutter, a Stratasys FDM (fused deposition modeler), and a HAAS CNC machine.

The garage space contains the remaining equipment and space required to integrate the ERL’s innovations into actual vehicles. The garage has a vehicle lift, a full set of Snap-On tools, vehicle diagnosis equipment for all Volkswagen group vehicles, and a full-time certified technician. The ERL also has access to the VW Group parts database and repair manuals, as well as a number of test vehicles at our disposal.

This spread-spectrum of laboratory space makes it possible for the ERL engineers to innovate unhindered, to design without bounds, and to bring ideas from the drawing board to the streets at rapid speed.
